Klemen, Neza :
Klemen, Neza :
Klemen, Neza :

Q. Please introduce yourself to readers in Korea.
BASTARDS is an imprint specialising in technological wear for dogs. We combine high performing components and materials with a made-to-measure cut approach. Our vision has been making garments and accessories to support doggos and their movement in all their crazy endeavours.
Q. Have you visited Korea before? I would love to hear your impression of Korea.
We have not, but would love to. Korea looks amazing and there is so much culture we would love to enjoy. I think we would feel very welcome there as well as BASTARDS, which seem a perfect fit for Seoul.
Q. I heard that both of you have been working in the fashion-based industrial design field for a long time. Can you specify what skills you two studied and what career you had before you started BASTARDS?
Klemen has been working as an industrial designer for more than a decade, with quite a few high brow projects behind and in front of him. Neža has been studying fashion design when our paths crossed and BASTARDS emerged.
Q. How did you two meet? How did the BASTARDS come together? Please tell us about the beginning of BASTARDS.
BASTARDS has started from the need for a good, high performing and high quality dog coat for Bruce, the face of BASTARDS, and Klemen’s whippet. With the Covid lockdown and some time on our hands we began experimenting and with more than a dozen tries the BASTARDS coat was born.
Q. Why did you name your brand BASTARDS?
The main reason is because we liked the sound of it… And let’s be honest, dogs are cute little bastards.
Q. Was there any part that was difficult to work on as the subject of design changed from a person to a dog?
There were challenges as they are with any new subject or project, of course. The biggest was probably making patterns for such a different shape of the body with the goal to be very well tailored. The rules of traditional tailor making were shaken and we always had to think of their foul legged movement. But it was really fun learning and adapting our way of thinking.
Q. What is your most important criterion when designing dog products?
Our most important idea is that they are designed for dogs. They are built around their behaviours, habits, movement and needs. From there we like to make it friendly for the owner and thirdly comes the design. We love to follow the Bauhaus approche ‘form follows function’. With that the pieces work well and have a timeless look to them.
Q. I can see that your brand is very focused on ‘functionality’, can you tell us why?
We wish to emphasise all the qualities of our best friends. They are very active and can run really fast, there was a huge hole in the market. We wanted to offer ‘activewear’ for pups while also looking fashionable and not be restricted in their play.
Q. Where do you find inspiration when designing and creating products?
mostly in our need for a specific product. From there we mostly build with materials that fascinate us, combining functional elements with high fashion. We love to search for different materials in diverse industries and find inspiration in them.
Q. What do you think is Bruce's favorite from BASTARDS? And tell us why you think so.
BASTARDS coat and puff armour combination. He really doesn't like cold and rain… so in that outfit he feels safely bundled up and can run and play even in winter.
Q. Compared to other pet product brands, what do you think is the difference/competitiveness of BASTARDS?
I think what really sets us apart is the reason we created the brand. To have high performing garments made especially for the movement of dogs. We’ve studied it extensively and still do with each new product we develop, make adjustments or rethink it. We also love researching materials and finding the very best ones which are durable, easy to maintain and move great with them.
Q. There is still a negative view of owners making their dogs wear clothes. It's a sensitive story, but as a representative of BASTARDS, we are curious about your opinion about dog clothes.
If dogs have thick fur and good underhair isolation there is no need for clothing and can even harm them. Overheating can be a dangerous problem. The same can happen with low quality fabrics and especially costumes for pets which are made from cheap materials. Bad cuts of the garments can also cause bruises and scratches.
But if dogs' natural isolation is not enough, if they are built slim, are puppies or are visibly shaking, then they should be dressed in an extra layer, just as you are. We’ve even written an e-book on the topic which is available on our website.
Q. Among BASTARDS products, which product are you most proud of?
All of them, really. So much time goes into development of the product that you have to fall in love with it for the product to see the light of day. We are really proud of all of them since we’ve grown so much in the process and have mastered many challenges with each and every one of them.
Q. Please tell us which BASTARDS products you would like to recommend to people who raise dogs in Korea, which boasts such extreme weather. And tell us why you recommended it.
We created the BASTARDS wardrobe for such versatility. Slovenia has very similar weather to Korea and our idea was to create wardrobe essentials to have available for all elements. You can stack them, mix and match and always be ready to conquer the weather. You can combine the coat with two different undercoats, the classic undercoat for transition weather and puff armour for extreme cold, or wear it by itself. The coat is light, durable, has great thermal properties and is water resistant. The same goes for the raincoat, which works great for doggos with thicker fur and ones who aren’t used to wearing clothing as you can just wrap it around them.
Q. What kind of brand will BASTARDS be in the future? Please tell us about your upcoming projects or future targets for BASTARDS.
There are so many things just behind the corner, in the development stage or written down as a plan for the future. We don’t want to give out anything yet, if you wish to know, you’ll just have to follow BASTARDS story!
Q. Please briefly introduce BASTARDS’s muse, Bruce.
A ball of energy and a handful at all times, a gorgeous black whippet who has at five years old gotten grey spots around his eyes from so much wisdom.
Q. Tell us the story of how you first met Bruce.
First time was when he was just a few weeks old. He was the most excited and troublesome puppy in the litter, so I knew we were meant to be.
Q. Tell us more about Bruce’s charm point. What is the personality like?
He is a really happy dog. He likes all people and all other animals. He makes friends with animals really fast and loves to play with anyone. He always needs to be close to me, even when we are working. When we work in the atelier, he is there to supervise us.
Q. What do you think is the biggest advantage of Whippet?
They are so sensitive and really like to be close to owners … and like to cuddle all the time.
Q. What do you think is the most important value in living with a companion animal?
They just make your life better. And it's so hard to be sad after you have an animal in your life. You organise your life around them and it gets better and you always have someone with you who loves you.
Q. Tell us about the favorite moment in your day with Bruce.
All of them.
Q. In your view, when is the happiest moment for Bruce?
Every time I come home. Even if it is just after 5 min when I take the trash out, he gets really excited to see me.
Q. Do you have any special hobbies (activities) you enjoy with Bruce?
More or less all my activities include Bruce. But for him playing catch in the park is his favourite. He loves to run.
Q. Compared to other countries you have been to, what are the different characteristics of Slovenian pet culture?
Almost every person in Slovenia has pets at home. Most popular are of course dogs and cats. So many times they have both. We have a lot of nature so people spend a lot of time outdoors and like to bring their dogs with them on walks, hikes and even mountains.
There is also very little to none stray animals in the cities, our shelters take great care of them and a lot of people adopt their pets.
Q. What are the most popular dog breeds in Slovenia?
Probably Greyhounds. There are many adopted greyhounds from Spain and Ireland in Slovenia, especially in Ljubljana.
Q. Out of all the places you go to with Bruce, please introduce your favorite place.
Mine is cuddling on the couch with him, but for him is probably our city park and nature around it.
Q. Is there a place you would recommend to Korean pet owners visiting Slovenia with their dogs?
Slovenia is famous for its untouched nature, we have beautiful mountains, seaside and endless forests. There are so many possibilities for adventure with your pet in the wild. And even the cities are exquisite, old and charming, where pets are welcomed. Usually they bring dogs a bowl of water before they even take an order for you in a restaurant. And all of the city water fountains have dog bowls on the floor.
Q. Do you have a favorite pet brand besides BASTARDS? Please introduce us briefly.
We don’t have any that we like, that is the reason we created BASTARDS.
Q. What kind of food does Bruce eat usually and what kind of snacks does he like? And if there is any special food you prepare for Bruce, please let us know.
He eats dry food of the highest quality. Lots of meat with known origin, without any grain additives.
Q. What is a bucket list you want to do with Bruce?
To fly a rocket.
Q. If Bruce could understand human language, what would you like to tell him?
I think he understands most of the stuff I say, even if he pretends he doesn't. But I don’t wish to tell him something, I do feel I need to show him every day how much I appreciate him by spending as much time and doing fun activities with him.
Q. Lastly, if you have anything you want to say to the readers of Pobls, please feel free to share.
Respect and appreciate your pets, otherwise you don’t deserve them. They always try to do the best for us so why wouldn’t we do the same.
