Q. 우선 TAJINASTES 켄넬에 대해서 먼저 소개해주세요.
TAJINASTES는 1984년에 스페인의 카나리아 제도의 테네리페 섬에서 시작된 미니어쳐 슈나우저 전문 켄넬입니다. 20년 전인 2002년에 더 높은 브리딩 목표를 달성하기 위해 바르셀로나의 북부 해변에 10,000㎡(약 3,000 평) 규모로 확장 이전했습니다. 새로운 이전한 켄넬에는 성견과 강아지를 위한 공간이 별도로 분리되어 있고, 아이들이 어울려 마음껏 뛰어 놀고, 일광욕을 즐길 수 있는 너른 운동장도 따로 갖추고 있습니다.
40년 가까운 시간 동안 TAJINASTES의 아이들은 유럽, 미국, 아시아, 아프리카 등 세계 각국에서 훌륭한 슈나우저들과 경쟁하고 있습니다. 세계 최고의 도그쇼를 포함해 총 250개가 넘는 챔피언 타이틀을 땄고, 도그쇼 최고의 상인 BIS(베스트 인 쇼, Best in Show)를 50회나 수상했죠. 도그쇼뿐만 아니라 일부 아이들은 아질리티와 도그 스포츠에서도 놀라운 성과를 거두고 있습니다.

Q. 이런 놀라운 성과를 거둘 수 있었던 TAJINASTES만의 브리딩 철학이 있을 것 같은데요.
우리는 건강(Health), 아름다움(Beauty), 그리고 품성(Temperament)을 가장 중요한 브리딩 기준으로 삼고 있어요. 강아지를 선별하거나 새로운 혈통의 개를 수입할 때도 이 세 가지 요소에 있어서 만큼은 어떤 것과도 타협하지 않으며, TAJINASTES만의 까다로운 기준을 반드시 준수합니다.
전문 브리더로서 최고의 강아지를 선별하고 배출하는 것도 중요하지만, 우리는 아이들이 완벽한 가족의 일원으로서 행복한 생을 보내기를 무엇보다 바랍니다. 그게 그 아이들에게 최고의 삶이며, 우리가 존재하는 이유기도 하니까요.

Q. 브리더가 되기로 결심하게 된 이유가 궁금합니다.
저는 TAJINASTES 켄넬의 2대 브리더에요. 우리 부모님은 내기 태어나기도 전부터 미니어쳐 슈나우저를 브리딩을 시작하셨죠. 자연스럽게 저는 애기 때부터 슈나우저들과 함께 자랐고, 동물을 사랑하고 존중하는 법을 배웠습니다. 그리고 18살이 되자마자, 켄넬의 공동 운영자가 되었고, 20년 넘게 미니어쳐 슈나우저를 브리딩하고 있습니다. TAJINASTES가 원하는 수준의 슈나우저를 브리딩하는 일은 결코 쉽지 않지만, 이건 진심으로 즐겁고 가치있는 일이기에 제 인생을 걸었어요.

Q. 세상에는 수 많은 견종들이 있는데요. 왜 미니어쳐 슈나우저였나요?
저는 브리더인 동시에 그루머(Groomer, 미용사)이기도 해요. 유럽 그루밍 협회 소속 심판이고, 직접 대회에 참가하기도 합니다. 그루머로서 이력은 제게 수 많은 품종을 경험할 수 있는 기회를 주었죠. 미니어쳐 닥스훈트, 브뤼셀 그리폰, 쁘띠 브라방송, 베들링턴 테리어 등 견종들과 함께 했었는데요. 모두들 제게 많은 것을 주었지만, 일시적이었습니다. 미니어쳐 슈나우저만이 항상 제 인생 안에 있었죠.

Q. 미니어쳐 슈나우저만의 매력은 무엇인가요?
미니어쳐 슈나우저는 매우 특별해요. 가족에게 헌신적이며, 어떤 종류의 환경에도 적응력이 매우 뛰어납니다. 슈나우저의 기원은 인간을 돕는 워킹독(Working Dog)으로 강인한 설치류 사냥꾼이었습니다. 이때부터 인간에게 순종적이고 훈련하기 쉬운 품성을 이어오고 있어요. 동시에 사이즈는 작지만 가족을 보호하기 위한 용맹함도 갖고 있어 대형견의 풍모가 느껴지죠.

Q. 저도 평소 슈나우저를 보면서 작은 사이즈와 달리 무척 당당하다고 느꼈습니다.
젊은 사람, 노인, 혹은 어린 자녀가 있는 가족 등 다앙한 형태의 입양자들이 슈나우저와 함께 하면서 느끼는 행복과 만족감을 전해 듣는 게 가장 큰 보람입니다. 슈나우저는 어떤 형태의 가족과 환경에도 훌륭하게 적응할 수 있거든요. 이런 특징들은 슈나우저를 지구에서 가장 인기있는 견종 중 하나로 만들었습니다. 아마 슈나우저와 한 번 가족이 된 사람은 다른 견종에 눈이 가지 않을 거에요.
그리고 슈나우저는 털갈이를 하지 않는 품종이라, 사람들이 집에서 관리가 쉽고 알러지 가능성도 낮은 장점도 있죠.

Q. 브리딩에서 당신이 가장 중점을 두는 부분은 무엇인가요?
앞서 얘기한 대로 브리더로서 제가 가장 중요시 하는 건 아이들의 행복(welfare)이에요. TAJINASTES는 그 목표를 이루기 위해 안락하고 안전한 환경을 제공하도록 꾸준히 투자를 하고 있습니다. 위생과 청결과 위생을 관리하는 직원과 그루밍을 담당하는 직원도 따로 고용하고 있어요. 그리고 각각의 개체에 적합한 식단에 맞춰 양질의 음식을 제공하고, 체력과 근력 유지를 위해 하루 3번 운동을 합니다. 건강 유지를 위한 훌륭한 수의사가 컨디션을 수시로 체크하고요. 이 모든 요소를 완벽히 유지하면서 브리딩을 진행합니다. 번식은 당연히 우리가 원하는 수준의 자견을 배출하기 위한 과학적인 연구와 선택에 바탕을 두고 있고요.

Q. TAJINASTES가 지향하는 이상적인 슈나우저의 모습은 무엇인가요?
TAJINASTES는 그 동안 이상(理想)에 매우 근접한 슈나우저를 번식해 왔습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 항상 개선의 여지가 있다고 생각해요. 도그쇼에 참가할 때 우리는 그 견종의 표준(스탠다드)를 존중하는 동시에 눈에 보이지 않는 매력, 우아함에 집중하죠. 쾌활하지만 예의바르고 섬세한 캐릭터, 화려하고 역동적인 움직임은 TAJINASTES의 슈나우저를 더욱 특별하게 만들어 줍니다.

Q. 슈나우저에게 가장 적합한 반려인은 어떤 사람일까요?
음… 미니어쳐 슈나우저에게 가장 이상적인 반려인은 자신의 인생을 이 아이들과 나눌 의지가 있는 사람입니다. 다른 조건들은 크게 중요하지 않아요. 나머지는 녀석들이 다 알아서 할 겁니다.

Q. 당신은 입양을 원하는 사람들에게 어떤 질문을 하나요?
우리는 입양 희망자에게 질문을 하기 보다는 교육을 하는 걸 선호합니다. 입양 희망자에게 보내는 우리의 첫 번째 메일은 슈나우저의 관리의 중요성, 가족으로 함께 생활할 때 필수적인 요소들, 그리고 그에 수반하는 비용과 시간에 대한 정보가 주된 내용입니다. 이 메시지를 받은 후 TAJINASTES 슈나우저 중 한 아이의 가족이 될 수 있는지 생각하는 건 그들의 몫입니다. 그게 우리 방식입니다.

Q. 입양이 결정된 후에는 입양자에게 필수 요구사항이 있나요?
강아지를 입양하기 전에 예비 반려인은 여러 번의 이메일과 전화, 그리고 화상 회의를 하게 됩니다. 커뮤니케이션 과정을 통해 그들에게 슈나우저와 반려생활에 대한 조언 및 의무와 책임에 대해 주지시키죠. 이게 아이를 보내기 위해 우리가 할 수 있는 전부입니다. 만약 어떤 입양자가 반려견을 잘 돌보지 않는다면, 법적인 제재를 받을 수 있겠지만, 다행히 TAJINASTES의 입양자들은 모두 책임감있는 반려인들이었습니다.

Q. 가장 기억에 남거나 성공적이었던 입양 사례가 있으면 알려주세요.
TAJINASTES의 강아지로 인해 한 가정이 행복으로 충만해진다면 모두 우리에겐 성공입니다. 그 중에서도 우리 강아지가 신체적 또는 심리적으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 반려인들의 훌륭한 가족이 되어 삶을 함께 할 때 특히 브리더라는 일에 대한 만족감과 자부심을 느낀답니다.

Q. TAJINASTES의 대표견들을 소개해주세요.
우리는 ‘솔트 앤 페퍼(Salt & Pepper)’와 ‘블랙(Black)’ 두 가지 모색의 미니어쳐 슈나우저를 브리딩하고 있어요. 솔트 앤 페퍼 중에선 월드 위너 ‘Tajinastes Obra Maestra’, 유럽과 미국 챔피언인 ‘Tajinastes Keep Calm’, 미국과 스페인 챔피언 ‘Tajinastes Gomera’가 있습니다. 블랙은 미니어쳐 슈나우저 역사상 가장 많은 수상 이력을 보유하고 있는 ‘Tajinastes Perla Negra’가 대표견입니다. Perla Negra는 50개 이상의 챔피언 타이틀과 메이저 도그쇼의 BIS(Best in Show) 수상 이력을 보유하고 있죠. ‘Unjedi Tajinastes’는 유럽과 미국에서 BIS를 차지했고, ‘Tajianstes ?pico’는 키예프에서 열린 유럽 도그쇼에서 BIS 3위를 기록했습니다.

Q. TAJINASTES는 1년에 몇 번이나 자견을 배출하나요?
안타깝게도 TAJINASTES의 슈나우저를 기다리는 모든 분들을 만족시킬 수는 없습니다. 정확한 숫자를 제시하긴 어렵지만, 대략적으로 1년에 배출하는 강아지는 24마리 내외로 제한합니다. 이게 강아지들을 온전히 보살피고 관찰할 수 있는 우리의 수용 한계입니다.

Q. 슈나우저의 단이와 단미에 대해서는 어떤 입장인지도 궁금합니다.
2018년부터 스페인에서는 미용 목적으로 개의 귀나 꼬리를 자르는 것이 완전 금지되었어요. 그 후로 TAJINASTES는 단이, 단미 수술을 하지 않고 있습니다. 미니어쳐 슈나우저는 이제 완전히 다른 실루엣을 갖게 되었고, 이제 모든 사람들이 슈나우저의 새로운 쉐입을 인정해야 합니다. 이 흐름은 불가역적이며, 조만간 모든 나라에 전파될 거라고 믿습니다.

Q. 미니어쳐 슈나우저의 입양을 고려하고 있는 한국의 반려인들에게 조언을 한다면요.
만약 미니어쳐 슈나우저와 가족이 되는 걸 고민하고 있다면, 걱정 말고 입양하라고 권하고 싶어요. 그 선택은 여러분의 인생 최고의 결정이 될 거라고 확신합니다. 그리고 입양할 슈나우저 켄넬의 혈통 라인을 조사해보세요. 유전적인 문제는 없는지, 그리고 검사를 꾸준히 진행하고 있는 지도요.

Q. 제가 알기로는 슈나우저는 외모와 건강을 위해 어느 정도의 스트리핑 등 관리가 필요한 걸로 압니다.
미니어쳐 슈나우저는 털갈이를 하지 않기 때문에, 반드시 털을 인위적으로 제거해주어야 합니다. 최고의 모질(coat)을 얻기 위한 가장 일반적이고 확실한 방법은 털을 뽑아 제거하는 기술인 핸드 스트리핑(Stripping)입니다. 스트리핑은 쇼독 퀄리티부터 미용실 수준까지 다양합니다. 물론 클리퍼 컷으로도 슈나우저를 관리할 수 있습니다. 아주 편리하고 간편하지만, 슈나우저의 고유한 모색, 광택, 질감은 포기해야 합니다. 간단하게라도 스트리핑을 한 아이와 클리퍼를 쓴 아이의 외모는 천지 차이입니다.

Q. First of all, please introduce TAJINASTES KENNEL and you as a breeder to Korean readers.
Tajinastes Kennel is a Miniature Schnauzer kennel founded in 1984 on the island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. Twelve years ago we moved to Barcelona in order to grow, improve, and reach new goals.
Our facilities are located in a coastal area north of Barcelona and have 10,000 square meters of property. We have a covered kennel separating the areas of adults and puppies. We also have a series of playgrounds where they can play, sunbathe, and interact during the day.
In these almost 40 years, our dogs have competed in Europe, America, Asia, and Africa . They have obtained more than 250 championship titles and 50 Best in Show awards, at some of the most important conformation shows in the world. In addition, several of our Schnauzers compete in agility trials with magnificent results.
We base our breeding philosophy on three equally important points: health, beauty, and temperament. We are very demanding and non-conformist, always looking for the improvement of these 3 aspects by selecting and importing only the best dogs to our kennel.
Although we obtain a very high quality in our puppies, we prefer that they end up as pets in families. We think it is the best life for them.

Q. Why did you decide to become a breeder?
I am the second generation in the Tajinastes kennel. My parents were breeding this wonderful breed before I was born. So, I grew up with Schnauzers and puppies in my home. I was taught to love and respect animals. As soon as I was 18 years old, I became the co-owner of the kennel and have been running it for more than 20 years now. Breeding Schnauzers to the level we want at Tajinastes is difficult but it is certainly a job that I really enjoy and it has become a way of life.

Q. There are many kinds of dogs, but why did you choose Schnauzer?
I inherited this breed, but besides being a breeder I am an all around groomer. I have been a competitor and now a judge of the European Grooming Association. This has given me the opportunity to know many other breeds. I have even bred Miniature Dachshunds, Brussels Griffon, Petit Braban?on and Bedlington Terriers. All of these breeds have given me a lot, but they have been temporary. The Miniature Schnauzer has always been in my life.

Q. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Schnauzer?
The Miniature Schnauzer is a very special breed. It is especially remarkable for it’s devotion to it’s master and its adaptability to any kind of life.
Their origins were as a working dog with humans. They were rodent hunters in stables. From here, they have remained an obedient and easy to train dog. They are alert to possible intruders and have the temperament of a big dog in a small body.
It is still fascinating how our clients thank us for the happiness that our Schnauzer has brought to their homes. Whether it is a young person, a family with small children, or elderly people. This is a dog that can adapt to the lifestyle of it’s owners and not the other way around. This is what has made the Schnauzer one of the most popular and appreciated breeds on the planet. Anyone who has a Schnauzer will never wish to have another breed ever again.
The Schnauzer is also a breed that does not lose hair by shedding. This makes them generate less possibility of allergies to their owners and therefore easy for most people to have in their home.

Q. What is the most important thing you consider to be in the breeding?
As a breeder, we give a lot of importance to the welfare of our dogs and puppies. To achieve this we have invested in facilities that offer comfort, space, and protection to our dogs. Hygiene and health are undoubtedly fundamental so we have employees who are in charge of the daily cleaning and disinfection of the facilities, and also the grooming of our animals. We feed a quality food adapted to each animal and our dogs go out to exercise 3 times a day to so they stay in great shape. We have a very good veterinarian to prevent and treat any possible diseases or problems.
Having all these factors under control, the breeding is based on study and selection to obtain the type of puppies that we are looking for.

Q. What is the most ideal Schnauzer you want to complete?
We have bred Schnauzers that have come very close to our ideal in the breed. Although, because of our standards we always think that there is room for improvement.
When we see a specimen at a dog show, besides being a correct dog with respect to it's standard, it is fundamental for us that the dog has a special elegance that makes it stand out from the rest of the correct dogs. This, together with a fun and attentive character and spectacular movement is what we value the most at Tajinastes.

Q. Who is the most suitable guardian(adopter) for schnauzer?
The ideal owner for a Miniature Schnauzer is someone who is willing to share his life with the animal. He will do the rest.

Q. What questions do you ask to those who wish to adopt?
Rather than question potential clients, we prefer to educate them. The first email responding to a potential client is an informative message about the importance of the care of a Schnauzer, the commitment we make when we take a living being home, and the expense of money and time that it entails. After this message, it is the client who must think about whether he/she is a possible owner for one of our Schnauzers.

Q. Do you have any mandatory requirements for adopting puppy?
Before picking up one of our puppies, a client receives several emails, calls, and meetings. These communications are where he/she is given advice, obligations, and duties. We cannot do more than inform. If a person is not responsible with his pet, the Spanish law of animal welfare will penalize him. But luckily our clients are always very responsible.

Q. What is the most memorable adoption case?
Filling a home with happiness with any of our puppies is a success for us. But I must say that when a dog becomes the companion of a person with physical or psychological challenges, it fills me with satisfaction and pride.

Q. Please introduce your representative dogs.
In Miniature Schnauzers salt and pepper our World Winner "Tajinastes Obra Maestra", our champion of Europe and USA "Tajinastes Keep Calm" and our champion of USA and Spain "Tajinastes Gomera. In Miniature Schnauzers black color, we have the most awarded bitch in the history of the breed, "Tajinastes Perla Negra". She has more than 50 titles of champion and Best in Shows in the most important shows in Europe , our top winner of BIS in Europe and USA "Unjedi Tajinastes", and the 3rd of Best in Show at the Euro Dog Show in Kiev "Tajianstes ?pico".

Q. How many times a year do you have puppies?
We try to have puppies all year round, but unfortunately we can not attend to all the people who are interested in our dogs.
Our limit is 24 puppies. This is the number that we know we can provide the care they deserve. Each year the number of puppies varies, as working with living beings is unpredictable.

Q. What do you think about cutting a Schnauzer's ears and tail?
Since 2018 it has been totally forbidden to crop the ears or dock the tail in Spain. Since then, I accept the law but must admit that the aesthetics of the breed have changed. The Miniature Schnauzer now has a different silhouette. We have become accustomed to the new image of the breed and we believe that the ban on cropping or docking will arrive sooner or later to all countries.

Q. Please give advice to Korean people who are raising Schnauzer or want to adopt them.
I would encourage people who are hesitant to adopt a Miniature Schnauzer to do so without worry, I assure you that it will be one of the best decisions of your life.
For future breeders, I recommend that they study very well the kennels and lines, that they investigate the diseases and tests that can be performed on the breed. Before acquiring dog for breeding, think about the facilities needed, and the time and expenses that must be invested. Make a breeding and business plan and then look for the dog that you want to buy as the founder of your kennel.

Q. As far as I know, Schnauzer require hand stripping. Please tell me some grooming know-how to do with a pet dog at home.
The Miniature Schnauzer does not shed hair, so it must be removed. The typical way to get the best coat is by handstripping, a technique by which the coat is renewed. There are several ways of stripping the coat, depending on whether you want to strip for competition or for salon grooming. They can also be maintained with a clipper cut. This is a more comfortable way for the groomer, although this cut deteriorates the color, shine, and texture of the coat.
