개라는 동물은 제 삶을 추동하는 가장 큰 에너지원입니다. 저의 이런 성향은 아버지로부터 물려받았어요. 아기 때부터 지금까지 평생을 개와 함께 살아왔죠. 자연스럽게 1980년대 초부터 도그쇼를 참관하기 시작했고, 직접 내 개를 데리고 도그쇼에 참가하기로 결심했죠. 그 개가 바로 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트(wire-haired dachshund)였습니다. 그렇게 1989년 MONTECASSIANO 켄넬을 시작했습니다.

지금까지 브리더로서 갖고 있는 신념은 무엇보다도 ‘개를 동등한 생명체로서 존중하자’입니다. 그들의 신체적, 정신적 안녕을 유지하고 돌보는 게 첫 번째 목적인 셈이죠. 저는 사람과 격리되어 좁은 공간에서 개를 기르고, 사업을 위해 암컷에게 출산을 강요하는 일부 브리더의 방식에 전적으로 반대합니다.

MONTECASSIANO는 개들에게 무한 책임을 다하고, 윤리적이고 체계적인 브리딩을 선행한 선배들의 작업을 이어받아 지속해야 한다는 책임감도 무겁게 갖고 있습니다.

Q. 브리더가 되겠다고 결심하게 된 이유가 궁금합니다.
운이 좋게 첫 번째 닥스훈트가 무척 멋진 녀석이었어요. 우리는 함께 즐거운 시간을 보냈고, 도그쇼에도 참가했습니다. 이탈리아뿐 아니라 여러 나라를 여행하며 많은 승리의 기록을 같이 만들었어요. 여기서부터 닥스훈트와 저의 이야기가 시작됩니다.

첫 번째 수컷 닥스훈트와 같이 입상 기록을 쌓으면서, 첫 번째 암컷도 가족으로 합류했습니다. 그 녀석 또한 함께 수 많은 도그쇼에 참가해 좋은 성적을 올렸어요. 이후 두 아이의 첫 번째 자견이 태어났고, 그 중에서 제가 브리딩의 토대로 삼고 싶은 강아지들을 선별했습니다. 그리고 나서 켄넬 설립을 위해 ENCI(이탈리아 애견 협회)에 등록했고, 그렇게 MONTECASSIANO 켄넬의 브리더가 되었죠.

Q. 많은 견종 중에 유독 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트를 선택한 이유가 있나요?
처음 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트를 처음 봤을 때부터, 그 녀석들의 외모에 매료되었습니다. 위엄과 품위가 있으면서도 우아하고, 동시에 강인함도 같이 갖고 있죠. 제가 꿈꾸는 ‘시골 신사(rural gentleman)’의 이미지를 고스란히 보여준 견종이었습니다.

Q. 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트의 단점은 무엇인가요?
솔직히 이 질문은 답하기 쉽지 않네요. 이유는 제가 사랑하는 견종이기 때문입니다. 저는 지금 10마리의 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트들과 함께 집을 공유하고 있는데요. 녀석들 모두는 동등하게 제 사랑과 존중을 받을 자격이 충분합니다. 나는 이 견종을 브리딩하는 동안 단점을 발견하지 못했습니다.

Q. 브리딩(번식)을 할 때 가장 중요하게 여기는 기준이 있다면 알려주세요.
브리더의 가장 큰 업적은 뭐니뭐니해도 브리딩한 개들이 품종 고유의 형태적인 아름다움뿐만 아니라 균형잡히고 안정적인 품성과 친화적인 기질에서도 두각을 나타낼 때라고 생각해요.

새로운 가족을 만나는 것은 강아지와 사람 모두에게 엄청난 모험입니다. 그러므로 이 강아지가 성견으로 자랐을 때 공격성을 보이지 않는 것처럼 일상에서 발생할 수 있는 행동 문제들이 나타나지 않게끔 하는 것이 중요합니다. 이러한 이유로 저는 건강하고 품성 좋은 개를 선택하고 강화하는 것이 가장 중요한 요소라고 생각합니다.

Q. 당신이 완성하고 싶은 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트의 가장 이상적인 모습이 궁금합니다.
이상적인 닥스훈트는 공식 표준에 의해 정의됩니다. 제가 유일하게 받아들일 수 있는 기준이죠. 닥스훈트의 표준은 FCI(국제 애견 협회)에 의해 상세하게 기술되어 있습니다. 품성과 외형(크기, 비율 등)에서 벗어나지 않는 것이 필수적이며, 이는 완벽한 땅굴(Underground) 사냥꾼이라는 닥스훈트의 기원과 정체성에 부합하는 것입니다.

견종 표준은 오랜 시간 동안 종을 연구하고 발전시켜온 사람들에 의해 꾸준한 수정과 보완을 거쳐 완성된 것이므로 과소평가되거나 변형되어서는 안됩니다. 브리더는 이에 부합하는 개를 번식하기 위해 최선을 다 해야 하죠.

Q. 당신이 생각하는 이 견종에 가장 잘 어울리는 반려인은 어떤 사람인가요?
와이어 헤어 닥스훈트는 작은 개지만 필드에서 사냥을 위해 개량된 만큼 대형견의 풍모가 느껴지는 대담한 성격과 개성을 갖고 있습니다. 동시에 소파의 편안함도 사랑합니다. 강인한 성격과 끈기, 용기, 그리고 인간 친구를 향한 무조건적인 애정은 닥스훈트를 이상적인 반려견으로 만들어 주었죠.

이 녀석들은 도시 생활에 적응하는 법을 잘 알고 있지만, 아무래도 전원 생활에 더 적합합니다. 그리고 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트는 지치지 않는 미친 체력을 갖고 있기 때문에 녀석들과 함께 장거리 산책이나 조깅, 운동을 즐길 수 있는 반려인이라면 더할 나위 없는 최적의 조합입니다. 때문에 정적이거나 운동을 좋아하지 않는 사람에게는 어울리는 종이 아닙니다.

Q. 강아지 입양을 원하는 사람들에게 어떤 질문들을 하나요?
저희 켄넬은 제한된 수의 강아지를 배출하기 때문에, 많은 입양 문의 중 일부만 선택할 수 밖에 없습니다. 곤혹스러운 일이긴 합니다만, 제가 가장 중요하게 보는 건 입양 희망자가 단순히 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트를 원하는 게 아니라 특별히 MONTECASSIANO의 닥스훈트를 원하느냐입니다. 그래서 입양 희망자들이 올바른 정보를 갖고 있는지 몇 가지 질문을 합니다. 예를 들어 우리 켄넬의 닥스훈트 중 어떤 아이를 가장 좋아하는 지 묻습니다. 강아지가 정원이 있는 주택에 사는 지, 작은 아파트에 사는 지는 사실 중요하지 않습니다. 그 아이가 사랑받고, 입양자가 그 아이와 함께 사는 것이 행복하며, 주어진 환경에서 최선의 방법으로 아이를 돌보는 것이 중요합니다.

Q. 강아지를 입양하는데 필수 요구사항이 있나요?
저는 단지 입양자가 강아지를 위해 제공할 수 있는 생활 조건과 얼마나 많은 시간을 함께 보낼 수 있는지를 알기 위해 질문합니다. 그러나 대부분 제가 입양자들에게 강아지와 함께 만족스럽게 생활하는 방식을 제안하죠. 그래서 저는 항상 입양자들에게 그들의 최신 정보를 알려달라고 요청하고, 가능하다면 미팅을 제안하기도 합니다.

Q. 그 동안 MONTECASSIANO 켄넬에서 많은 강아지들이 분양되었을 텐데요. 가장 기억에 남는 입양자는 누구인가요?
저는 세계 여러 나라의 반려인들로부터 입양 요청을 받습니다. 이런 관심과 문의는 브리더로서 자랑스러운 일이고, 저와 우리 개들이 함께 잘 해내고 있다는 걸 확인하는 방법이기도 하죠.

한 번은 네덜란드의 브리더가 우리 켄넬에서 특정한 강아지를 입양하고 싶다고 메일을 보내왔습니다. 그는 자신의 선택에 대한 명확한 기준을 갖고 있었어요. 드디어 기다리던 수컷 강아지가 태어났고, 그와 배우자는 네달란드에서 강아지를 만나기 위해 찾아 왔습니다. 정말 뛸 듯이 기뻐했고, 두 달 후 이 부부는 강아지를 데려가기 위해 한 번 더 MONTECASSIANO를 찾았습니다. 그렇게 우리는 친구가 되었고, 이탈리아에 방문할 때마다 오래된 예술의 도시를 함께 여행했습니다. 지금까지도 깊은 우정을 쌓고 있죠.

이 개의 이름은 Baudolinodi Montecassiano입니다. 2015년 WDS(FCI WORLD DOG SHOW)에서 월드 호프 타이틀을 땄고, 네덜란드에서 YOUNG CHAMPION 타이틀을 거머쥐었죠. 현재는 8살이 되었고, 수 많은 네덜란드 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트의 아버지이자 할아버지가 되었습니다.

Q. MONTECASSIANO의 대표견을 소개해주세요.
훌륭한 브리더는 도그쇼에 참가해서 다른 켄넬의 개들을 많이 만나야 합니다. 그래야 객관적으로 나의 개와 타인의 개를 평가할 수 있습니다. 도그쇼에서는 최고의 개만이 오랜 과정과 수 차례의 수상의 기록을 통해 ‘챔피언’이 될 수 있습니다.

이스탐불(Istambul Mon Amour, 2009년 생)은 비앙카(Bianca)와 블루(Blue)의 아버지이고, 그레고리오(Gregorio), 지알라(Gialla), 마젠타(Magenta)의 할아버지입니다. 저는 이 녀석들 모두가 매우 자랑스럽습니다. 특히 그 중에서도 그레고리오는 나와 함께 최고 닥스훈트의 영예를 두 번이나 차지했습니다. 이탈리아 닥스훈트 클럽에서 영 챔피언에 올랐고, 이듬해 성견조에서도 챔피언에 선정됐습니다.

2018년 생인 그레고리오는 도그쇼 링에서 강인한 신체 구조로 뛰어난 존재감을 보여주는 수컷입니다. 그는 수 차례 국제 도그쇼에서 최고의 닥스훈트(Best of Breed)를 수상했고, 여전히 젊음을 뽐내고 있습니다. 우리의 모험은이제 시작이죠.

Q. MONTECASSIANO는 1년에 몇 번이나 강아지를 배출하나요?
앞서 말씀드린 이유들뿐만 아니라 개인적인 선택에 따라 일년에 2~3번 이하로 브리딩합니다. MONTECASSIANO의 암컷은 일생 동안 평균 3번 정도 번식하고, 첫 번째 출산은 그의 도그쇼 커리어를 완료한 후에 이루어지죠. 대체로 3살 이전입니다.

Q. 와이어 헤어 닥스훈트의 입양을 고려하고 있는 한국의 반려인들에게 조언을 해준다면요.
닥스훈트를 이미 기르고 있는 분들에게 제가 드릴 수 있는 조언은 아이들을 위해 장거리 산책을 자주 해주고, 건강한 음식을 주어야 하며, 살이 찌지 않도록 세심히 돌보아야 한다는 것입니다.

Q. First of all, please introduce DI MONTECASSIANOKENNEL to Korean readers.
Dogs have always been my great passion, I have inherited it from my father. In effect, I think that I’ve lived my whole life in the company of a dog. I started attending dog shows many years ago, in the early '80s, I accompanied some of friends that were breeders. Then, I decided to take a dog to participate in shows: a German wire-haired dachshund.
Being a breeder, in my philosophy, means respecting dogs, above all, taking care of their physical and mental well-being.
I totally disagree with those breeders who keep their dogs in tight spaces where they live a sad life without contact with the man; females are also frequently forced to give birth, just for business.
I feel the responsibility of my dogs, the responsibility of continuing the breeding work begun by other breeders before me.

Q. Why did you decide to become a breeder?
I was lucky with my first dachshund, we had fun together: many trips, many dog shows, many victories in Italy and abroad and from here my story with dachshunds begins.
After the achievements of the first male dachshund, the first female arrived, and she also took part in many dog shows.
After the first litters, I started selecting the puppies that I wanted to keep and then I applied to ENCI (Ente nazionalecinofilia italiana, responsible for the recognition, standardisation and registration of pedigree dogs in Italy) for the granting of a Kennel Name and thus was born The Montecassiano Kennel (1989).

Q. There are many kinds of dogs, but why did you choose teckel?
From the first time I met a German wire-haired dachshund, I was charmed by his appearance: a nice dog with great dignity, elegant but also robust, as a rural gentleman can be, the same image I would like to give of myself.

Q. What are the advantages(pros) and disadvantages(cons) of teckel?
To be honest, the answer is not easy: it’s a breed that I love, I share my house with 10 wire-haired dachshunds and all of them deserve my love and my respect, everyone equally. I haven’t found a flaw in this breed yet.

Q. What is the most important thing you consider to be in the breeding?
I think that the greatest achievement of a breeder is when dogs of his kennel stand out, not only for their morphological beauty, that is characteristic of this breed, but also for their balanced temperament.
When a puppy finds a new home, a new company with which to spend his life, it is an adventure for him and for his new family. So, it’s important that this this encounter doesn’t present problems, just as it is important that the adult dog doesn’t show signs of aggression.
For this reason, I think that the most important factor of breeding is to select healthy and balanced dogs.

Q. What is the most ideal teckel you want to complete?
The ideal dachshund is defined by the Official Standard of the Dachshund, the only one that I accept. The German Dachshund is described by FCI. It is essential not to depart from the temperament and the appearance described (e.g. size, proportion etc.), which make it a perfect underground hunter.
All of this is a result of years and years of work that should not be underestimated or transformed.

Q. Who is the most suitable guardian(adopter) for teckel?
The German dachshund is a small dog but with a great personality and character, a breed that was born for hunting and loves the comfort of the sofa. His strong character, his tenacity and courage, and the unconditional love for his human friend make him an ideal companion.
He knows how to adapt to life in the city but in the countryside is even better, everything is fine for him if you take long walks, because he is a tireless walker. So, I can definitely say that if you are sedentary people, the German dachshund is not a dog for you.

Q. What questions do you ask to those who wish to adopt?
The choice to keep all my dogs in the house involves a limited number of litters and this puts me in the position of being able to satisfy only a part of the requests I receive.
It is important to me that the potential adopter does not want any dachshund, but specifically a ‘Montecassiano’ dachshund. I ask questions to understand if you have the right information, for example, asking which dogs of my kennel are your favorite. For me, it does not matter if the puppy lives in a villa with a garden or in a small flat, it matters to me that he is loved and that the adopter has the pleasure of living with him and taking care of him in the best way.

Q. Do you have any mandatory requirements for adopting puppy?
I only ask useful questions to understand what living conditions they can provide for the puppy and how much time they can devote to him, but mostly I give suggestions. Always ask to keep me updated, often proposing meetings when possible.

Q. What is the most memorable adoption case?
I receive requests for my puppies from different countries of the world: Canada, Portugal, Sweden, Belgium, and many others. This makes me proud and represents, for me, a confirmation that I am doing a good job with my dogs. For example, a Dutch breeder texted me for to adopt a puppy many years ago. He wanted a son of a specific male and a specific female, he had very clear ideas about his choice.
The puppy arrived and he and his wife came from Holland to meet him, they were really happy about this puppy. After two months, they came back to get him. We became friends - by now, they visit us in Italy quite frequently and we often make trips to the cities of art together. The dog’s name is ‘Baudolinodi Montecassiano’, eight years old. He won the title of World Hope at WDS (World Dog Show) 2015 and the title of Young Champion in Holland.
He is father and grandfather of many Dutch puppies.

Q. Please introduce your representative dogs.
Good breeders must face others in dog shows, to assess their own dogs and those of other breeders. In dog shows the best dogs are awarded and only at the end of a long path and many top places a dog becomes a ‘Champion’.
‘Istambul Mon Amour’ is the male from which ‘Bianca’ and ‘Blue’ descend - from which, in turn, ‘Gregorio’ ‘Gialla’ and ‘Magenta’ descend. All of them are champions, some of them not only in Italy. I am very proud of all of them, but especially of my Gregorio with whom I got the highest award for a dachshund twice: Young Champion of the Italian Dachshund Club and, the following year, Champion in the adult category.
Gregorio is a male with a strong structure and a great presence in the ring. He was often been awarded as Best of breed in international dog shows. He is still young, our adventure is not over yet.

Q. How many times a year do you have puppies?
For the reasons I mentioned earlier, but also for a personal choice of management, no more than 2-3 litters per year. My mares give birth on average 3 times in their life and the first birth doesn’t take place before the end of their exhibition career, but anyway before the three years of age.

Q. Please give advice to Korean people who are raising teckel or want to adopt them.
For those who already have a dachshund, my advice is to take him out for long walks and give him healthy food, taking care not to fatten him up.
For those who want a dachshund, my advice is not to follow the trend in choosing a puppy: a dachshund must meet certain standards, written in the country from which the breed originates: Germany. The breed standard is that of the FCI. So, look for a real dachshund.
