Q. 우선 ‘보가하지(Bogarhazi)’ 켄넬에 대해 소개해주세요.
안녕하세요. 저는 세르비아에서 보가하지 켄넬을 운영하고 있는 지타(Zita)라고 합니다. 보가하지는 FCI에 1989년에 등록한 웨스트 하이랜드 화이트 테리어(이하 웨스티) 전문 켄넬입니다.
처음엔 잉글리시 코카스파니엘로 시작했지만, 곧 제 인생을 송두리째 사로잡은 아이를 만나게 되었죠. 그게 바로 웨스티였어요. 그때가 1991년이었어요. 그 후로 줄곧 작은 규모로 켄넬을 운영하고 있어요.

Q. 보가하지 켄넬의 운영 철학이 있나요?
보가하지 켄넬의 컨셉은 ‘퀄리티’에요. 그래서 적은 수의 아이들과 가족으로 함께 살고 있어요. 1980~90년대 세계 최고 명문이었던 에쉬게이트(Ashgate) 켄넬 혈통을 기반으로 시작했어요. 그리고 오랜 기간 동안 세계 정상의 켄넬에서 품성, 건강, 외형 등을 마음에 그리며 브리딩에 적합한 아이들을 영입했습니다.
하지만 우리 개들은 단순히 브리딩만을 목적으로 하지 않아요. 모두 제 가족이죠. 저는 모든 아이들과 정서적으로 교감하는 게 가장 중요하다고 생각해요. 그리고 아이들이 저를 행복하게 하는 만큼, 저도 아이들을 행복하게 해줘야 한다는 마음이죠.
30년동안 보가하지는 수 많은 챔피언을 배출했고, 새롭게 탄생한 웨스티 켄넬들의 브리딩 토대가 되었어요. 그리고 수 많은 출신견들이 평범한 가족의 일원이 되었어요. 웨스티 브리더로서 저는 우리 개들로 인해 소중한 인연과 우정을 만들었고, 덕분에 세계 어디를 가도 저는 혼자가 아니랍니다. 그건 정말 환상적인 기분이에요.

Q. 브리더가 되겠다고 결심하게 된 계기가 있나요?
저는 어렸을 때부터 동물에 미쳐있었지만, 엄마의 반대로 유년기엔 기를 수 없었어요. 겨우 설득해서 토끼, 고양이, 닭을 키우기는 했지만, 제가 꿈꾸던 개를 키우지는 못했어요. 엄마는 늘 “나중에 결혼하면 키우라”고 말씀하셨죠.
전 동물을 사랑했기 때문에 어릴 때부터 ‘가축 사육법’을 공부했고, 제게 기대가 컸던 엄마는 큰 실망을 했죠. 하지만 나는 지금 보가하지의 브리더이고, 이를 통해 상상할 수도 없을 만큼 큰 사랑을 이루었어요. 어릴 때부터 제가 가장 중요하게 여긴 건 일과 인생이었기 때문에 브리더가 되겠다고 결심하는 게 그렇게 어렵지 않았어요.

Q. 여러 견종 중에서 웨스티를 선택한 이유가 궁금해요.
제가 어릴 때는 세르비아에서 웨스티를 보기 어려웠어요. 그러다 1989년 TV에서 웨스티를 처음 보고 첫눈에 사랑에 빠져버렸어요. 그리고 브리딩에 적합한 암컷 강아지를 가족으로 맞이하기 까지 2년이 걸렸어요. 역시나 웨스티는 제 성향에 딱 맞는 견종이었죠. 녀석들은 호기심이 많고, 에너지가 넘치며, 똑똑해요. 게다가 좋은 기질과 친절함도 갖고 있죠. 웨스티는 제가 개를 좋아하는 모든 이유를 갖고 있었어요.

Q. 웨스티의 장점은 뽑는다면요?
웨스티는 너무 크지도, 작지도 않은... 매우 활기찬 견종이에요. 인생의 모든 부분을 함께 나눌 수 있는 개에요. 긴 산책을 할 수도 있고, 개털이 없는 소파에서 함께 휴식을 할 수도 있죠. (털이 적게 빠짐) 무엇보다도 모든 테리어들 처럼 똑똑하고, 뭐든지 빨리 배웁니다.

Q. 브리딩을 할 때 가장 중요하게 여기는 점은 무엇인가요?
전 기본적으로 건강과 비율(proportions), 그리고 품성이 좋아야 한다고 생각해요. 이는 꾸준히 도그쇼에서 타이틀을 획득함으로써 객관적으로 가치를 인정받아야 해요. 또한 웨스티가 사냥을 목적으로 개량된 작은 테리어라는 걸 잊지 말아야 해요. 견종 표준대로 종을 유지하고 발전시키는 것이 중요합니다.

Q. 궁극적으로 완성하고 싶은 가장 이상적인 웨스티는 어떤 모습인가요?
앞서 말한 대로 가장 이상적인 웨스티는 표준에 부합하는 거에요. 저는 특히 비율에 각별히 신경을 쓰는 편이에요. 몸의 형태가 사각형을 유지해야 해요. 그리고 개인적으로 이상적인 웨스티는 콤팩트하고, 강인하며, 활동적이고 자신감을 갖고 있어야 합니다. ’행복하고 사랑스런 얼굴을 한 작은 에너지 폭탄’이라고 표현할 수 있어요. 그리고 눈은 어둡고 거칠어야 하고요.

Q. 웨스티는 도시 라이프스타일에 적합한 견종인가요?
물론이죠. 웨스티는 사이즈도 적당하고 어떤 환경에도 빠르게 적응하기 때문에 도시생활에 최적입니다.

Q. 웨스티에게 가장 적합한 반려인은 어떤 사람일까요?
반려인은 기본적으로 자신의 개와 함께 할 충분한 시간이 있어야 합니다. 특히 테리어를 입양하려면 매우 활동적이고, 일관성있고, 충분한 리더십을 갖고 있어야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 어느 날 개가 집에서 보스가 되어 있는 걸 알아차리게 될 테니까요. 테리어는 그만큼 강인한 견종입니다. 또한 웨스티는 외모 관리가 필요하다는 걸 잊지 말아야 해요. 미용사에게 주기적으로 아이를 맞기거나 직접 미용 관리를 할 의지와 노력이 필요합니다. 이 모든 게 준비되어 있을 때 비로소 웨스티와 함께 할 자격이 생깁니다.

Q. 말씀하신 대로 웨스티는 털 관리가 필수인데요. 간단한 관리 노하우가 있다면 소개해주세요.
웨스티는 ‘핸드 스트리핑(Hand Stripping)’이라는 특별한 그루밍이 필요해요. 그러나 대부분의 가정견은 클리퍼로 털을 깎죠. 만약 외형적으로 멋지게 보이고 싶다면, 4~6주마다 오래된 털을 뽑거나 끊는 스트리핑 작업을 반드시 해야 해요.
이 작업은 집에서도 충분히 가능합니다. 빗질을 하면서 일주일에 1~2번 정도 해주세요. 그리고 빈번한 목욕은 모질을 파괴하니까 피해야 해요. 웨스티의 털은 강하고 거칠어야 해요. 그래야만 코트 자체의 ‘셀프 클리닝(Self-Cleaning)’이 가능해져요.

Q. 보가하지에서 강아지 입양을 원하는 사람들에게 어떤 질문을 하나요?
우리 켄넬에 새로운 입양 문의가 올 때마다 저는 그 사람에 대해 최대한 많은 것을 알아내려고 노력해요. 어디에 살고, 어떤 환경에서 생활하며, 무엇을 하는 사람인지, 생활 패턴은 어떤지.. 무엇보다 웨스티에게 그가 기대하는 게 무엇인지를 묻습니다. 그 모든 걸 확인해야만 이 사람이 웨스티에 적합한 반려인인지 확인할 수 있으니까요.

Q. 그럼 강아지 입양자에게 요구하는 필수 사항이 있나요?
저는 미래의 반려인과 강아지 입양 전에 메일과 메신저를 통해 커뮤니케이션을 많이 하는 편인데요. 기본적인 조건은 제가 입양자에게 공감이 되는 지입니다. 우리 강아지가 안전하고, 좋은 관리와 사랑을 받을 거라는 확신이 들어야 해요. 입양자는 보가하지 패밀리의 새로운 멤버가 되는 셈이니까요.
그리고 우리 강아지 중 어떤 하나라도 케이지 안에서 살기를 절대 바라지 않아요. 거실 안에 있는 케이지 조차도요. 그런 환경이라면 분양하지 않아요. 그 어떤 개도 작은 케이지나 공간에 격리된 채 오랜 시간 지내선 안 된다는 게 지론이에요.

Q. 웨스티를 처음 키우는 사람에게 조언을 한다면요.
사랑과 일관성. 이게 바로 웨스티와 함께 행복한 반려 라이프를 만드는 열쇠입니다.

Q. 가장 기억에 남는 입양 케이스가 있으면 소개해주세요.
2003년이었어요. 엄마와 아들이 강아지를 보기 위해 저희 켄넬을 방문했어요. 그때 작은 남자 아이는 8~10살 정도 됐고, 엄마는 아이가 모은 돈으로 입양할 거라고 말했죠. 처음엔 회의적이었어요. 제대로 개를 키울 수 있을까 싶었거든요. 하지만 그 후로 여러 번 켄넬을 찾아왔고, 전 조금씩 그들의 애정과 진심을 느낄 수 있었어요.
그 소년은 결국 우리 강아지를 입양했고, 늘 함께 소통했습니다. 또한 스트리핑을 위해 주기적으로 우리집을 방문하면서 곧 친구가 됐죠. 그 강아지의 이름은 벤디(Vendy)였는데요. 16년을 살고 떠났어요. 그 동안 소년의 성장을 곁에서 지켜봤죠. 소년은(이제 젊은 청년이 됐지만) 무지개 다리를 건넌 벤디에게 긴 편지를 썼답니다. “네 덕분에 이타적이고, 모두를 사랑할 줄 알며, 인내심있는 사람으로 성장할 수 있었다”고요. “정말 고마웠다”고.
그건 제 브리딩 인생에서 가장 감동적인 순간이었고, 브리더라는 직업을 택한 보람이었어요.

Q. 브리더로서 가장 뿌듯했던 순간은 언제인가요?
제가 브리딩해 분양한 ‘뉴패션(Bogarhazi New Fashion, 사진)’이 2017년에 독일 라이프치이에서 열린 도그쇼에서 200마리의 웨스티 중 JWW(Junior World Winner)에 오르고, 테리어 그룹 중 가장 아름다운 6마리의 주니어에 든 놀라운 성과를 거뒀는데요. 뉴패션의 보호자는 내게 감사의 마음을 담아 JWW컵을 카피해서 보내줬답니다. 누군가에게 내가 하고 있는 일을 인정받았을 때의 기분은 환상적이었어요.

Q. 보가하지의 대표견들을 소개해주세요.
무엇보다도 뛰어난 암컷들을 소개해야 할 것같아요. 왜냐하면 좋은 켄넬과 좋은 브리딩의 기본은 뛰어난 모견이기 때문입니다.
보가하지의 토대가 된 모견 중 하나인 ‘우나(Bogarhazi Una)’는 인터내셔널 챔피언으로 많은 국가에서 챔피언 타이틀을 획득했어요. 대부분의 보가하지 출신 웨스티의 혈통서에서 우나의 이름을 확인할 수 있답니다. 우나는 제가 생각하는 가장 이상적인 웨스티의 모습에 근접했던 아이에요.
우나의 손녀인 ‘네버엔딩 스토리(Bogarhazi Never Ending Story)’ 또한 아끼는 아이 중 하나입니다. 할머니인 우나를 많이 닮아 완벽한 비율을 갖고 있는 암컷으로 수 많은 쇼에서 승리의 기록을 만들었죠. 네버엔딩 스토리의 딸인 ‘레드로즈(Bogarhazi Red Rose)’는 코로나19 때문에 커리어가 중단됐지만, 멀티 챔피언으로서 수년간 성공적인 도그쇼 커리어를 쌓았어요.
수컷 중에는 ‘뉴패션(Bogarhazi New Fashion)’과 ‘밤(Bogarhazi Bomb)’이 새로운 보호자와 함께 유럽 전역에서 커리어를 쌓은 멀티 챔피언들입니다. 이 자리를 빌어 자신의 시간과 에너지, 비용을 들여 전 세계에서 보가하지의 웨스티와 쇼를 뛰고 있는 모든 반려인들에게 감사를 표합니다.

Q. 웨스티를 입양하기를 원하는 한국의 반려인들에게 조언을 한다면요.
강아지를 입양하기 전에 나의 생활양식과 웨스티가 어울리는지 철저히 확인하고 공부하세요. 요즘엔 온라인에서 정보를 얻기가 쉽잖아요. 확신이 섰다면 나에게 어울리는 적합한 브리더를 찾아야 합니다.
만약 브리더를 컨텍한다면, 미래 강아지의 부모견이 될 개들의 건강 테스트 정보가 포함된 혈통서를 열람할 수 있도록 요구하세요. 그리고 생후 얼마만에 집에 데려갈 수 있는지, 어떤 백신을 접종했는지(최소 2번의 접종은 마쳐야 함) 확인해야 합니다.
또한 좋은 수의사를 미리 찾아 놓으세요. 주변의 평판을 확인하는 게 제일 좋습니다. 그리고 강아지가 새로운 환경에 적응하도록 충분한 시간을 할애해서 세심하게 돌보고 가르쳐야 합니다. 그 후에야 행복한 반려라이프를 시작할 수 있습니다.

Q. 브리더뿐 아니라 당신은 오랫동안 FIC 국제 심사위원으로도 활동하고 있는데요. 심사할 때 중점을 두는 포인트는 무엇인가요?
일반적으로 각 품종이 갖고 있는 특징을 잘 보여주는 개를 이상적이라고 평가해요. 그 중에서도 저는 견종의 전형적인 움직임과 좋은 기질이 조화를 이룰 때 가장 이상적이라고 판단하는 편이에요.

Q. First of all, please introduce BOGARHAZI to Korean readers.
Bogarhazi West Highland White terrier kennel is a small kennel, registerd in 1989. under the F.C.I. number 2711, based in Serbia.
First I started to breed English Cocker Spaniels, but soon after I found the breed of my life , THE WESTIE. That was in 1991. Since that I constantly have more or less westies, but never to much. My conception is make the quality , not quantity. My westies are based on most quality kennel in that time,that was the famous Ashgate kennel. With a time continue to import dogs based on most quality kennels, always bearing in mind type , health and temperament. My westies are not only breed dogs, but they are also my company. I considers very important to have personal contact with each one of them, and make them happy as they make me happy.
Today I have many Champion and Inter Champion dogs in my kennel and around the world. My dogs served as a basis for some newest westie kennels, and make company for many nice families. As a westie breeder I make many fantastic friendships based on my dogs and anywhere I go I’m not alone on the world. That is fantastic feeling.

Q. Why did you decide to become a breeder?
As a child I was crazy for the animals, but my mother didn’t like them, so I could not have in that time . Slowly I convinced her, and I can have rabbits, cats, chickens..... but not a dog with a pedigree , what was my dream. She always told me that when I getting to be married I can have them how many i want.
Because of my love for animals I study stock-raising. That was also a big disappointment for my mother, but I’m here now and my big love come true. My hobby is my work and my life. So, I think it is easy to see why I decided that be a breeder.

Q. There are many kinds of dogs, but why did you choose westie?
In that time in this area we haven’t weties at all. I saw westie in a tv firs time in 1989. , and I think it was a love at first sight. I needed 2 years to finde appropriate one female puppy for a breed, but yes, westie is a breed what fittest for my personality. They are interesting, energetic, smart, they have a good temperament and kind. All what I like in a dog.

Q. What are the advantages of westie?
They are a very lively dogs, not too big, and not too small. They can participate in every part of your life. You can go with them to a long walk and newer must to pick up them, because they are tired. On other hand you can rest on sofa with your westie, and don’t have a sofa full of their hair.
If you need a friend they are by you but they are not boring you whole day to take your attention. And first at all they are very smart dogs , as all terriers, and learn quickly. So I think they are ideal dogs for a people who are active and want to have a friend 0-24 h with themselves.

Q. What is the most important thing you consider to be in the breeding?
I think basically everyone should to tend for a healthy westies with good proportions, and temperament. I think today the hunt for titles goes at the expense of breed. We should to keep in mind that westie is a small hunting terrier, because of that is westie evolved. We must to tend to keep breed in live as it’s in standard written.

Q. What is the most ideal westie you want to complete?
For me the ideal westie is as it’s written in standard. I take special care about proportions.For me the ideal westie must be compact, strong, active, self-comfident, happy small energy bomb, with cute face, and waggish dark eyes. Ideal westie must stay in square and the proportion for-legs till elbow- body- neck till the end of the ears must be 1/3-1/3-1/3.

Q. Who is the most suitable guardian(owner) for westie?
I think all dog owners should to have enough time for their dogs. Specially, people who owned terriers should be a persons who are very active , consistent, and have enough authority. Otherwise one day they can wake up and they will notice that their dog is the boss in the house.
We can not forget the fact that westies need special care about coat, so westie owners must to be ready to take them for time to time to groomer or be able to make it alone.

Q. Is westie a suitable species for urban life?
Yes, they are completely suitable for urban life, thanks for their size, and adaptability.

Q. As far as I know, westie require hand stripping, Please tell me some grooming know-how to do with pet dog with home.
Yes, westies need special grooming ( hand stripping), but mostly the pet westies are treamed with machine. If you want that they look always nicely, they need to be stripped or cutted every months or at least in every 6 week. Stripping means that you must pull out old hair of the coat and whit this you can also give a form to look nice.
At home it is enough that owners brush them every week one or two times. They don't need to be washed, because shampoos destroying their hair quality. Westie coat must be strong and hard, in that case they coat is self-cleaning.

Q. What questions do you ask to those who wish to adopt your puppy?
Every time when someone ask me for a puppy I try find out as much is possible about the new candidate. Where is he/she live, what are his/her possibilities, conditions, what are his/her expectation from the westie ?

Q. Do you have any mandatory requirements for adopting puppy?
I exchange many letters or messages with future owners, before they get my puppy. I must to feel simphathy for future owners, and feel that my puppies will be safe, good cared, and loved. At least the new owners will be members of Bogarhazi family.
I never give any of my puppies to live in cages, even that cage is in the living room. I hate when any dog (not only westi), are closed on a little space or cage for a long time!!

Q. Give advice to someone who raising westie for the first time.
Love and consistency, this is the key of successful and happy life with westie.

Q. What is the most memorable adoption case?
It’s happened in 2003 when one family come to me whit their son to see the little puppy. The boy were only 8-10 years old, and his mother told me that the boy will pay her, from their own money what they gathered. I was a bit pessimistic , but they come to visit me more time and they were very simpathetic. They took a puppy, and of course we stay in contact all the time, they came to me for stripping regularly and soon we became friends. Vendy lived 16 years long, the children grows up beside her, and when she passed, that little boy, who is now a young man wrote a long memo for his dog. He thanks her that she helped him to grows up and learn to be unselfish, to love everyone, to be patience, and be such a lovely man as he is today.That was the most emotional moment in my breeding life. Because of that things worth that I’m a breeder!

Q. Please introduce your representative dogs.
Firs of all I must to mention my outstanding females, because I mean, that the good kennel and good breeding is based on good bitches.
One of my foundations female is Int Ch, multi Ch Bogarhazi Una, who was champion of many countries and give me several nice litters. In all Bogarhazi westie pedigrees you can finde her name. She was very close to my expectations of westie ideal. Her grand daughter Int Ch multi Ch Bogarhazi Never Ending Story is also one of my favorats. She looks like Una very much. She is compact little bitch with nice proportions. She has gained me a many happy moments with her victories, and still give me happiness as my company. Her daughter multi Ch Bogarhazi Red Rose was in last years my star. We have many successful big shows behind us in several countries. Unfortunately Covid stopped us for a several years.
Male Int Ch, multi Ch, JWW’17 Bogarhazi New Fashion is breeded by me but I’m not his owner. Although he live in Hungary I follow his carrier and wins in whole European shows.
Int Ch, multi Ch Bogarhazi Bomb was also star of my kennel last years, with his owners......... and many other Bogarhazi westies could mention here.
I must to say thanks for all owners of Bogarhazi westies who put so much work, energy and money to show my dogs around the world.

Q. Please give advice to Korean people who are raising westie or want to adopt them.
Before somebody want to buy puppy it should thoroughly inform about the breed, is it compatible with his/her lifestile. After that must to look after more breeders. Today easy to get information on internet. There are a many breeders with many type of westies, just must to choose the right one what he/she likes. If they contact the breeders they should ask for a pedigree, which health test have the parents of future puppy. In what age can puppy be rehomed, and which vaccines will get? All puppy must be chipped and minimum 2 times vaccinated. I also recomend them to find veterinarian, or ask friends for a good one to be ready when puppy take a puppy. New owners also must to be ready that in the start there is a period when they must teach puppy to be clean and puppy must adapt for owners lifestyle. After it just enjoy in life together whit your puppy..

Q. When was your happiest moment as a breeder?
It was when young male Bogarhazi New Fashion breeded by me and owned by my friend become to be JWW in Leipzig, in 2017. between 200 entered westies. He also choose in 6 most beautiful junior terrier in the Terrier group at JBIS. The owner decided to honored me with a copy of JWW cup. It was a fantastic feeling that someone recognized my work so much.

Q. What is the most ideal dog as an international FCI Judge?
Ideal dog dos not exist. We can only to tend for ideal dog in every breed. For me the dog is most ideal when the appearance is combined with a nice movement and a good temperament which is typical for a breed.
